Learning for all. Every child, every school, every day.

 March 1st, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The country experienced another tragedy last month, where 17 people lost their lives during a school shooting.  As you can imagine, our hearts are broken by what occurred in Florida. As a parent and an educator, it is my worst nightmare.
It is our practice to proactively train and drill for a variety of issues. We practice fire drills, shelter in place, and lockdown procedures. Fire drills take place monthly and schools are required to conduct two lockdown/shelter in place drills per year but we actually conduct them every quarter. The Cartwright School District did have a lockdown/shelter in place drill just last month. Our Safety Risk Manager regularly conducts specialized training for all staff.

As you can imagine, we have extensive emergency plans and protocols but for obvious security reasons, we do not share those with the public. However, we are continuously reviewing and improving our procedures and policies.

Please know that the safety of all of our students and staff is our top priority and that we are trained to provide specific direction to students in the event of an emergency. The Cartwright School District takes great measures to increase safety though various means such as perimeter fencing, surveillance cameras, School Resource Officers and emergency planning but the greatest asset we have is you! If you hear or see something that doesn’t look right or you hear any suspicious potential threats, take action and report it.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated, as always.

Dr. Jacob A. Chávez
